While planning the project, homeowners need to pick out the kind of barrier they want. It can not only provide privacy, but also be very decorative to add some style to the landscape. The concrete or dirt needs to be formed into a mound at the base, so that water drains away from the pole. This keeps standing water from rotting out any wood. The material also needs to be packed down to keep the pole from moving. Nail or screw braces onto the posts to keep them straight while the material at the base dries or settles.
Before adding the railing, make sure the posts are securely in the ground. Local building codes will specify about how tall the barrier can be. So the top railing is put on a short distance from where the top of the planks will be. The bottom railing will be far enough off the ground so that it is away from any moisture. The homeowner and neighbor should agree beforehand about which side the railings will be on and which one will only have the planks or boards. Installing a privacy fence can give a homeowner a sense of accomplishment and pride, and add value to their property. It can also help make their neighborhood more attractive, while providing them with more security.
